Why am I being asked for my tax residency?
Understanding tax residency declarations
Starting 1 January 2024, platform operators based in New Zealand (of which Mycare is one) are required to collect information on sellers that receive consideration from relevant services provided through digital platforms.
Mycare is required to report this information to the IRD each year and the information reported to the IRD will be exchanged under the 'Multilateral Convention for Mutual Administrative Assistance in Tax Matters', with foreign tax authorities that have implemented the Model Rules.
What does this mean for me?
There is nothing you need to do, except know that we will report your income and tax residency to IRD each year.
How do i work out my country of tax residence?
Knowing which country you are a resident of for tax purposes is different from your citizenship or immigration status. You are generally a tax resident of a country if you meet their specific "day count" test (often more than 183 days) or have a "permanent place of abode" (enduring relationship/home) there. Tax residency is distinct from immigration status and is determined by physical presence, duration of stay, and personal/economic ties.
Please refer to the relevant tax authority websites when determining your country of tax residence.
